Volunteering Opportunities Abound at York County Shelter Programs


Volunteers Needed at Shaker Hill Kitchens


Friday morning  - 8 a.m. to noon


Sunday afternoon - noon to 4 p.m.


Friday mornings - around 7 a.m.

pick up fresh bread from the

Bakery at Notre Dame in Alfred and drive it to Saco

-A Volunteer with a pick-up truck is needed to help pick up donations for the Shelter on an occasional basis.


-Bakery/Kitchen


-a volunteer is needed to help run the cash register at the Notre Dame Bakery

on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

-a volunteer is needed in the Bakery to run the cash register on a weekday

from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or for wherever time possible that can be donated.

-assisting staff with baking or preparation of meals is available any of the seven days of the

week.  If you have experience, great.  If not, the staff will be happy to teach you.

-sorting and re-packaging of food donations

-cleaning - Bakery always needs extra hands!

-assisting with retail operation (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday)

-Administrative assistance:  answering phones, directing calls, taking messages, filing, copying, faxing,    etc.  (8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday)

-Donation pick-ups for food and non-food.  Must have valid driver’s license.


Dining Commons


-setting up Dining Commons and serving the noon (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) or supper meal (4:00 to 6:00 p.m.).  Help needed 365 days a year.


Mama Mia’s


-setting up for our fund raising spaghetti and pizza dinners held every Friday from April through October (3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

-serving meals to the public, maintenance of buffet area, clearing and cleaning tables during the meal, washing dishes and helping clean up afterward (4:45 to 7:30 p.m.)


Ray Anger’s Community Farm - West Newfield


-volunteer drivers are needed on occasion to transport residents to their appointments

-volunteers are needed to offer instruction on such hobbies as knitting, sewing, quilting

-volunteer to help with instruction on making rustic furniture

-volunteer to help in the gardens

-volunteer to help with the making of holiday wreaths

-volunteer to lead an arts and craft activity


Food Pantry


-unloading and sorting food donations at the Pantry

-greeting clients, assisting with filling out forms and informing

clients of the daily offering (meats, cheeses or no meat, no cheese

and extra bread, fresh spices, fruit, toothpaste, etc.)

-logging in clients and ordering their box (boxes)

-assisting clients in need with transporting their boxes to their vehicles

-setting up standard food boxes prior to opening of the Pantry

-setting up food boxes to bring to the Bakery for emergency needs after hours

-assisting with the creation and coordination of fund raising, food drives, and community involvement (flexible schedule)


Miscellaneous


-assist the Maintenance Department with grounds keeping work projects (year round position, projects and hours to be determined)

-organize and maintain the library-assist with book, magazine and puzzle donations (2 to 3 hours per week, flexible schedule)

-design and assist with the implementation of a Shelter-wide recycling program

-seasonal:  extra help is needed at special events throughout the year such as Alfred Festival Day, Old Home Days in Waterboro, Maple Sugar Weekend, apple season, local fairs, etc.


Public Relations/Marketing/Donations:


-work with staff on development and implementation of fund raising projects

-work on food drives and community involvement

-assist PR person with educational/informational presentations to be shown to church groups, schools,  community organizations, etc.

-letter writing for donation solicitation, also tracking and organizing list of people/organizations solicited and the responses.

-assist with photography assignments on occasion

-assist with the design and distribution of special events/ fund raising flyers


Healthy Habits Program:


-volunteers to lead recreational activities

-volunteers to lead physical activities such as line dancing

-volunteers to lead artistic activities such as pottery, drawing, painting, and crafts

Volunteer Opportunities Posted May 12, 2010:


We need asap one or more volunteers to serve breakfast to shelter residents, with staff oversight, mornings from 6:30 to about 9:00 a.m. at the Shelter dining commons, George Rd, Alfred.  Days available to volunteer are the Monday through Friday slots. Folks can take one or more than one slot per week.

 

Bakery cash register and waiting on customers every other Friday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Bakery at Notre Dame, George Rd., Alfred

 

Bakery cash register and waiting on customers-slots available 9:30 to 12:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays, and some afternoon hours,  Bakery at Notre Dame, George Rd., Alfred

 

Volunteer to pick up bakery goods and produce from Hannaford in Kennebunk between 7:30 and 8:30 am on Saturday morning and deliver to Bakery at Notre Dame, Alfred

 

Volunteer to work along with another volunteer setting up, serving and supervising clean up of the noon meal on Tuesday from 10:30am to 1:30pm, location York County Shelter Dining Commons, George Rd., off Shaker Hill

At Shaker Hill Kitchens In Saco:


  1. -people needed to work the register:

          Monday 8 a.m. to noon

          Monday noon to 4 p.m.

          Tuesday  8 a.m. to noon

          Tuesday noon to 4 p.m.

          Wednesday  8 a.m. to noon

          Wednesday noon to 4 p.m.

          Thursday noon to 4 p.m.  ( there is someone filling in now so this is not

                                                     the most urgent need to fill)

         

           Drivers to deliver to catering jobs if they are willing to be on call.

           All they have to do is say “no” if they can’t do it.  No pressure at all.

           Deliveries are from Saco to Sanford, Biddeford, South Portland, Old      

           Orchard Beach.


            Bread delivery to Saco, pick up bread at 8 a.m., leave by 8:30 a.m.

            May have to wait a few minutes while loading, but they can have coffee

            and a treat or something)

We need a volunteer to do a pick up on donated food at the Wells Hannaford every other Saturday, between 7:30 and 8:30am and drop off at the Bakery at Notre Dame, Shaker Hill, Alfred to be used for the shelter feeding programs.
