September is Hunger Action Month
Hunger Action Month is a national campaign initiated by Good Shepherd’s Food Bank’s national partner, Feeding America, to generate awareness around the issues of hunger. Nearly 200,000 Mainers struggle with hunger – 15 percent of families and 21 percent of children are food insecure. During Hunger Action Month, we ask everyone in Maine to take action to fight hunger, all month long.
The center of Good Shepherd’s Food Bank’s Hunger Action Month campaign will be Skip a Meal – Feed a Neighbor, where they will ask people to forgo one meal on September 28 in recognition of the issue of hunger in Maine. Participants will also be encouraged to donate what they would have spent on this meal to GSFB or their local hunger relief organization.
Good Shepherd’s Food Bank’s partners are critical to building awareness for hunger during Hunger Action Month. Our agency can be involved by:
■Helping to spread the word – urge our supporters to participate in “Skip a Meal – Feed a Neighbor” by asking them to go to www.MaineHungerAction.org to take the pledge to forgo one meal on September 28. The intent is to engage participants by making a connection to how it feels to go without food – even for a short period of time.
■Promote through web & social media – post Hunger Action Month on your agency’s website, Facebook, Twitter, and any other outlets.
■Volunteer your agency’s Facebook/Twitter profile for the “Skip a Meal” day, using our specially created profile badge.
Hunger Action Month is our opportunity to join a movement that has a real and lasting impact on our effort to feed more Mainers than ever before. Whether it’s by advocating and raising awareness, making donations, or volunteering, individuals and organizations can find the way that’s right for them to make a difference during Hunger Action Month.
