The York County Commissioners voted to cease funding for the York County Shelter
Programs' Food Pantry after June 2011. This translates into a yearly loss of $30,000 in funding.
York County Shelter Programs is very concerned about how they will be able to supply critically-needed food for all those who are hungry. The York County Shelter Programs' Food Pantry
has relied on this vital county funding to operate for the past twenty years.
There is a campaign at the present time encouraging area residents to inform the County Commissioners, area legislators, and the media about the impact that this decision will have
on people who are in need. Below is a listing of the addresses of the County Commissioners.
Please take a minute to contact them. Post cards to send (as depicted above) are available
at the Bakery at Notre Dame in Alfred, Shaker Hill Kitchens in Saco, or at the Food Pantry
in Alfred.
York County Shelter Programs is encouraging area residents to consider helping to organize food drives in the organizations and clubs to which they belong, in their schools and businesses, places of worship, and in various locations throughout the community.
For information about organizing a food drive or donating food or monitoring a food solicitation site
please contact Martha Huestis at 324-8811 or Joan Sylvester at 324-1137.
Letter from Harold Jamieson
3/28/2011
To Whom It May Concern:
I recently delivered some food at the York County Shelter in Alfred, Maine.
I was upset to discover that $30,000.00 had been cut from their funding.
I am retired now and try to help others when I can, and it is a very rewarding
feeling knowing that I can do that.
We as a nation travel the world trying to help others; however I believe
charity starts at home. We live in a great country and I am a proud veteran
that served to protect our country, as well as other countries around the
world. It would seem that, we as a country, has always done more than
our share of helping.
The programs that are being cut now because times are tough are indeed the
same programs that we agreed to start because times were tough.
There must be other programs to cut back on. I can’t even imagine the
amount of programs we support. Kicking a person when he is down on
life is not what this country is about. When we cannot take care of our own
it is a sad situation we are in.
I don’t understand why we are bailing out on these needy people? When
things were good for these people, they were there for others and now that
they need us we are not continuing the help we granted them by
starting these programs.
Sincerely,
Harold Jamieson
