At the last county Budget Committee meeting, the motion was made and passed to reinstate the funding of $31,000 for the York County Shelter Programs' Food Pantry.

David James, the Budget Committee member who made the motion to reinstate the money to the Shelter’s Food Pantry, said that he delivers Meals-on-Wheels in his town, and sees poverty first hand. He further explained that the Shelter's Food Pantry does a good job giving out food to needy folks in all of York County, and he believes it is imperative to keep social services in the forefront of peoples’ minds.

It is hoped that area residents will attend  the Wednesday, Jan 18th Commissioners’ meeting and speak during the public comments section of the meeting in favor of passage of the funding of the Shelter's Food Pantry.

Updates on this planned meeting will be posted on the Shelter's

website:  www.yorkcountyshelterprograms.org

On Wed. Jan. 18, there will be a peaceful demonstration led by supporters

of the York County Shelter Programs' Food Pantry  outside the York

County Courthouse in Alfred at 4 p.m.

There will be many large banners and signs on display.  We are hoping for a

good turnout from staff, volunteers, residents, and local supporters.

We want to let the York County Commissioners and the general public  know

that the $31,000 cut in the County budget for the Food Pantry is simply not acceptable.

York County Shelter Programs' Food Pantry is serving more and more people with a

reduced supply of available food.

Supporters of the Pantry will be wearing scarves that say "Fund Our Pantry" that were made by students from Noble High School.

There will be large banners (painted on large white sheets) displayed outside of the

Courthouse that were also made by the students.

Staff, volunteers, and the residents of the York County Shelter Programs have

also made many signs of support.

The county funding of the Shelter's food pantry has been in the forefront of

the news for over a year.  Bill Nemitz featured a story about it on Oct. 11, 2011:

On January 12, 2012,  it was featured again:

This is the first time that supporters have planned a peaceful demonstration and incorporated the use of highly visible means to illustrate their concerns.

Area residents in support of the reinstatement of the $31,000 funding for the York County Shelter Programs' Food Pantry in the county budget are encouraged to attend the January 18 meeting.  There will be an opportunity for public comments  during the meeting.  The meeting begins at 4:30 but supporters are critically needed to hold a poster or banner and wear a scarf when we gather at 4 p.m.

Information and updates about the meeting will be posted on the Shelter's website: www.yorkcountyshelterprograms.org

Hope you can set aside time on Wed., January 18, at 4 p.m. to cover this very significant peaceful demonstration.

If you plan on attending, please let Joan Sylvester (joans@ycspi.org  or Mary Doyle

(mqdoyle@gmail.com)  ( 324-1137) know so that we can be sure to save a

“Fund Our Pantry” scarf for you to wear!

Ms. Kathy Sloat is shown wearing one of the scarves for the Jan. 18 peaceful demonstration made by one of her students at Noble High School.

Thanks Ms. Kathy Sloat and Noble High School Students for your incredible support!  Your willingness to make banners and scarves for the upcoming January 18 peaceful demonstration is amazing!!!
