CAN DO Project Is Great Success

Thanks to the efforts of Tom and Mary Couming of Kennebunk, the CAN DO program has brought significant amounts of revenue to the feeding programs at the York County Shelter Programs.

Tom Couming started the CAN DO program in 2007.  Patrick Corcoran, the owner of Corcoran Environmental Services, welcomed the project at the Kennebunk Recycling Center and Transfer Station at 36 Sea Road in Kennebunk.

Tom Couming has recruited volunteers who help collect and sort the bottles and cans. He is looking for additional volunteers. Even if someone can only donate an hour a week, it will be appreciated.

Tom Couming expressed his appreciation to all the individuals who have donated  their returnables to the CAN DO program.

Many thousands of cans/bottles are redeemed, and as a result, thousands of dollars have gone to charity.   Alliance Redemption of Sanford has also provided matching funds for some donated/redeemed returns.

Area residents can drop off their returnables at

Kennebunk Recycling Center and Transfer Station at 36 Sea Rd in  Kennebunk.

Please call Tom Couming of CAN DO at 985-0069 if you wish to volunteer or if you

have any questions.

York County Shelter Programs and the Church Community Outreach Services Food Programs benefit from the Can Do program.

Because of the success of this program,

two additional drop-off sites have been established for people to bring their returnables to benefit the York County Shelter Programs.

Alliance Redemption is located at 27 Hancock Lane at the old Hancock Lumber building near the Midas Muffler shop on Main Street in Sanford.  They are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Their phone number is  324-1647.  People bringing in their returnables need to inform the worker at Alliance Redemption that they are requesting that the money earned from the returnables should be credited to the York County Shelter Programs’ account.  Alliance Redemption will pay the Shelter six cents per can or bottle.

J&D Package and Redemption Store (across

from Hannaford’s in East Waterboro) has also

opened up an account for returnables for the

York County Shelter Programs.  Bottles can be returned seven days a week at J&D from

9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Their phone number is 247-3991.  They will pay the Shelter five cents

per can or bottle.
