“Adopt A House” Program

The costs to incorporate all the necessary energy-saving steps to make the York County Shelter Programs greener are overwhelming.  The Green Team at the York County Shelter Programs has initiated an “Adopt A House” program to encourage people to help in any way that they possibly can.   Area residents, community organizations, places of worship, employees of a business, civic groups, and families are asked if they would like to become members of the “Adopt A House” program.   Interested individuals are encouraged to consider raising money for the various components of the adoption of a house.

The fuel saving controls and installation for the

controls for the furnaces cost approximately $800.  Winterizing a window is approximately five dollars.  (One of the Shelter’s buildings has over fifty windows alone!)   A bag of blown insulation is around nine dollars per bag and it covers 38.2 sq. feet while a roll of insulation goes for approximately thirty-five dollars.  Installing a shower head flow saver costs approximately fifteen dollars and a water saver control for the kitchen sink runs a little over five dollars.  The donation of CFL light bulbs, exterior caulk, spray foam, pipe insulation of various sizes, and any type of weatherization materials is always appreciated.  It is requested that any monetary donations for the Green Fund are please specifically earmarked for the Green Fund when they are mailed to: York County Shelter Programs’ Green

Fund, Box 820, Alfred, Maine, 04002.

Individuals who would like to spend some time volunteering with the installation of the window weatherization and insulation and the water-saving devices are encouraged to contact Joan Sylvester, the Volunteer Coordinator and Community Relations Director at the York County Shelter Programs.  She can be reached at 207-324-1137, ext. 105 or by email at:  joans@ycspi.org

Becoming involved in the “Go Green” campaign at York County Shelter Programs is appreciated at all levels.  The weatherization of a window can translate into significant energy savings.   Individuals, businesses, and groups who participate in the donation of items or monetary contributions or who volunteer their time to help with the “Adopt A House” program will be recognized on the website of the York County Shelter Programs:
